Garden buildings and structures

Garden offices and timber frame buildings, garage fitouts, fencing and decking. Built to be usable in winter, not just in summer.

Timber frame garden room at the end of a Kent garden

What this usually is

Most people come to me wanting a room at the end of the garden, and most of the ones they have looked at online are sheds with a plug socket. The difference is what you cannot see once it is finished: the base it sits on, how the frame is tied together, how much insulation went into the walls and roof, and whether the cladding will still look right in five years.

I build the frame on site rather than dropping in a kit, which means it fits the plot you actually have, including the awkward corner and the fall across the lawn. Insulated, lined and wired ready for whoever is doing the electrics, so it is warm in winter and you are not looking for an extension lead.

Typical jobs

  • Garden offices and studios, insulated for year round use
  • Timber frame outbuildings, workshops and stores
  • Garage fitouts, lining, insulating and shelving out
  • Decking, raised platforms and steps
  • Fencing, gates and screening built to last more than a season

On site

What this looks like while it is happening

  • Base being set out in a garden

Setting the base out square. The rest of the build is only as good as this.

  • Timber pergola frame under construction over a patio

A pergola frame going up, cut to fit the patio underneath it.

  • Decorative fret screen panels being fitted to a garden structure

Screening and cladding, cut and fixed on site to suit the plot.

  • Timber frame for a garden building under construction

Frame up before the cladding goes on.

  • Finished cedar clad garden room with a green roof and glazed doors

Cedar clad and finished, roof planted rather than felted.

  • Timber framed garden orangery with a glazed roof

A period style orangery, built as a garden room rather than a lean to.

  • Timber pergola forming a shaded walkway through a garden

A pergola walkway, built to shade the path rather than just decorate it.

  • Composite decking built around an outdoor swimming pool

Decking around a pool, level and drained properly rather than just laid.
